This summer marks the 10th anniversary of Earth Matters’ Strawbale Education Centre located at Cottonwood Falls in Nelson. Come visit us every Saturday during the famers market to tour the building. This project was a monumental achievement as it was the first straw bale structure built within city limits in Canada!
Why straw? Our model building is an example of an ecologically sustainable building style. There is enough straw produced in North America to satisfy all of our residential building needs for our growing population and reduces our dependency on forest products. Energy efficiency is another bonus of straw with an R35 value which sizably reduces heating and cooling costs. It is also affordable, hypoallergenic and can be done by the do-it-yourselfer! Earth Matters often relays sustainable building workshop information to its email list; contact Colleen Matte at colleenmatte@yahoo.ca to sign up.
As leaders in sustainable and environmentally conscious projects, we are proud to reach this milestone. There will be a community potluck held at the Strawbale this summer to celebrate. For more information contact Earth Matters at 250-352-6011 ext. 17.
