Spring Equinox 2008
Here in the Kootenay's it is snowing yet somehow one can still sense spring in the air. It has been almost a year since we moved here from Vancouver and I am really starting to feel settled in. Our cozy home looks over Nelson and the Kootenay River and is attracting regular visitors for occasions such as full moon gatherings and potlucks. The winter was reflective, creative and inspiring and new projects are blossoming. The amount of snowfall was incredible; many days were focused solely on shoveling. New friends and opportunities are abundant and the feeling of fertility, hope and renewal are definitely in the air.
I have just returned from my travels to the coast where it is physically evident everywhere that spring has sprung. I visited my mother and beau pere in Victoria, where the daffodils are standing proud and the cherry blossoms light up the historic cityscape. Our visit to the coast was full of hugs, kisses and play dates with friends and well worth the eight and a half hour drive with two children under four! We managed to make the same time on the way home and were accompanied by my dear friend Marisa, the ride gave us the opportunity to further converse on the subject of her current article Personal Renaissance.
“Fertility, Hope and Renewal” is the theme for this season’s issue. The feminine nature of this theme should not deter the masculine reader as there is much on the topic that relates directly to the male and of course his interaction with the female. One such article would be Christian Prekratic’s column The Art of Men’s Health: The Deer Exercise. The theme is explored through a range of topics that include fertility of the mind, body and soil. Gillian ‘Herb Girl’ Smith touches on all three in her Herb Garden Column: The Many Faces of Fertility and the Herbs to go with them. From herbs to enhance dreamtime to the red wrigglers that do their work creating fertile compost Gillian shares with us her ideas on the subject. Jasmin Starrchild's column The Red Moon explores the controversial vaccine Gardasil that is currently being imposed upon our young girls in her article “Protecting the Wombs of Creation: Is Gardasil a worthy vaccination?” Bringing tears to my eyes this article is very informative and a more than worthy read for everyone. Also, in this issue we profile Pomegranate Community Midwives a group of very talented and dedicated women who are sharing their unique approach to midwifery care in Vancouver, British Columbia.
I would like to welcome Michael O’Connor who will be contributing his seasonal astrological column and to Dave Gardner who will be sharing his insights on food in the Nourishment column.
I look forward to the spring fun; gatherings and festivals are plenty, and to the continued growth of Re:Connection Magazine & Community Directory as we make leaps and bounds into the local communities this year. In the mean time I will be sipping nettle tea and waiting for the rest of the snow to melt so we can start digging out that garden!
